I said nothing, drinking my beer.

“Just as I assumed,” he replied, winked at me, and grinned from ear to ear. “There’s a lot of men in Vanmer that like to use Steven Reider as a bookie, and I’m glad you’re one of them. Reider is popular in these parts and feeds most of his clients’ money.”

“What if he goes down?” I asked.

“Then we all go down, Johnny. Isn’t that logical?”

I ignored his question and asked, “Does your brother know about Reider’s illegal doings?”

“Fuck yes.”

“Does Jim place bets with Reider?”

He shook his head. “Jim is as an Honest Abe who follows the law. Of course he doesn’t do bad business with Steven Reider. Get that thought out of your head. My brother is a good cop. Don’t paint him to be a criminal or I’ll beat the fuck out of you.”

“You a violent man, Bobby?”

He shook his head.

“You kill Tad Dossner and Jamie Bodice?”

He shook his head again.

I took a sip of my afternoon beer and asked, “Who are Reider’s top clients in this city?”
