Chapter 23

The trio ate their meals together, but at night, Robert stayed in Leslie’s room and slept on a cot to be near him. “Like old times in the orphanage,” Leslie said, and after hours of talking, weeping, and coming to terms with what he’d done, Leslie began to heal.

And then, one day in early June, their men came home.

After a rough homecoming—Leslie met Cyril at the door and yelled out, “Mr. Wilson’s arrived, Caro,” and Caroline’s contrite confession she’d quite by accident spilled the beans about his lovely member—Cyril seemed more than thrilled to be home with his wife for the birth of Baby Graham.

Edward, briefed by Caroline about Leslie’s part in Winnie’s death, raced into Leslie’s arms and spent a good two days in bed with his lover.

“I won’t ask you not to leave me again,” Leslie said, coming up for air, “because I know it’s impossible.”

“Hmm. Quite. Given the fact I serve at the government’s pleasure and can be called upon at any time.”
