Chapter 16

Slightly after eight o’clock, Evan arrived at the Pearl of the Orient, an upscale restaurant where the doorman welcomed customers with a deep bow. Inside, the muted lights, soft music and table cloths of orchid and gray created a pleasing atmosphere. As the spicy fragrance of Szechuan and Hunan cuisine made his mouth water, Evan’s hopes for a good evening rose.

The hostess escorted him to their table. Danny was already seated and in the act of pouring tea into a delicate porcelain cup. Evan said, “Hey, I’ll have some of that, too, please.” He slid into the chair and smiled.

Danny’s face lit up. “Hi, I’m glad you came.” Placing the cup in front of Evan, he asked, “Have you ever eaten here before?”

“No, it’s all new to me.” Evan opened the menu and scanned it. “Any recommendations?”

“Well, the Mongolian beef is fabulous. It’s the house specialty. And if you like seriously spicy, I’d recommend the hot and sour soup as well.”
