At dinner, Danny informed his mother he and Evan would be taking a few days for themselves. The news was not well-received.
“Danny, that is just not possible. I need the two of you to be here for wedding preparations. You will just have to postpone.”
Danny’s first instinct was to agree to change his plans to accommodate his mother. But he remembered the raw look in Evan’s eyes. No, his fiancé had to come first. “I’m sorry, Mother, but Evan needs to get away. And I’m going with him.” Secretly enjoying the look of astonishment on her face, he added, “Make whatever arrangements you think best. We won’t be gone long—no more than three days.” He smiled brightly at her, finding the thrill of defiance invigorating.
Before Nessa could renew her objections and insist Danny change his plans, Katie jumped in and changed the topic of conversation. Danny smiled gratefully at her, and the dinner continued with no further comment on his insubordination.
