Chapter 16

“In the kitchen,” Evie says, frowning at him as if he should already know this.

Rubbing his face, Gavin sighs. “All right. Can you bring it to me?”

Evie laughs. “It’s attached to the wall, Daddy! It won’t stretch in here!”

The wall.Marian’s calling his land line. What on earth for?

Gavin moves his legs off the sofa, groaning at the pins and needles in his ankles. Slipping off his stomach, Evie dances out of the office and into the hall. Gavin moves slower, feeling every ache and pain from dozing in such a cramped position. He’s too tall for the sofa, he knows this, but he thought maybe if he stretched out there instead of on his bed, he wouldn’t really fall asleep. But from the grogginess clinging to his mind, he knows he napped deep, and he’ll be lucky if he gets to bed before midnight now. What time is it, anyway? He should maybe start thinking about dinner…

From the kitchen, Evie calls out shrilly, “Daaaa-ad!Mommy says she needs to talk to you now!”
