Hoping he sounds more casual than he feels, Gavin says, “Oh, Marian’s not my wife.”

“Oh, well, her name was next to Evie’s in your contacts,” Brody explains.

“She’s Evie’s mother,” Gavin tells him, “but we’re not together. We weren’t ever…really…How’d you get into my contacts anyway?”

Brody laughs again, so disarming that Gavin finds himself grinning along, as well. “I just sort of guessed at the password. Evie told me she was seven, so I tried the year I thought she was born, but when that didn’t work, I thought maybe she had a birthday recently and I tried the year before. Next time you lose your phone, you might want to make sure the password’s something a little harder to crack.”

“I normally try not to lose it,” Gavin says. “You said you don’t go to State, right?”
