Chapter 21

So, well, that changes things.

Tapping his horn, he pockets his keys as he steps out of the car. “Hey, man!” he says with a wave.

From inside the car, Evie cries, “Brody! Daddy, let me out.”

“Unbuckle yourself first,” Gavin tells her.

But she’s already unbuckled, and tugs at the handle on the door. “It won’t open!”

Of course not—he has child safety locks. When he opens her door for her, she launches out of the car and careens off his legs, then races around the front to the grassy area that separates the parking lot from the bus stop. “Brody!”

“Careful, Evie!” Gavin says, but it’s wasted breath. He watches her barrel into Brody’s legs for a tight hug around the knees and laughs. “Looks like you’ve found a friend.”

Brody’s grin only enhances his good looks. “I think she found me.”
