Once he thought he was in love, a long time ago when he lived with the Jerk, before Marian came along, before Evie was even thought of, much less conceived. But everything he’d felt in that relationship pales when he holds it up against what he has with Brody.

From the back seat, Evie pesters, “Do you, huh? Do you?”

Gavin feels his cheeks heat up as he admits, “Yeah, I guess I do.”

“Awww!” Evie cries with a clap of her hands. “Daddy loves Brody! Daddy loves Brody!”

“Okay, honey, enough.” Gavin smiles at her in the rearview mirror. “How about we not tell anyone about it just yet, okay? It’s like a secret.”

She covers her mouth with her fingers and giggles. “Shh!”

“Don’t say anything to Brody about it,” Gavin says. “He doesn’t know yet. And God, whatever you do, don’t tell your mother.” 26
