“Oh!” The man behind him, clearly the owner of the voice, circled around Luke and knelt down, attempting to rescue Luke’s drinks. He looked up toward Luke and slowly straightened up. “I’m so sorry. If you let me buy you…”
Luke recovered soon and he shook his head.
“No, that’s okay.” He was silent for a moment. “That’s okay.” Losing those coffee cups was nothing compared to the trouble he was facing. How could he have thought he was free or safe? Luke stared through the diner’s door, half expecting the Welthers to step inside any minute.
The man mimicked Luke’s gesture, looking through the entrance of the café, frowning.
“Are you sure you’re all right?” the man asked Luke again. “Is it better for you to sit down for a while?”
Luke’s attention focused on the man looming before him. Despite his large size, this man looked kind. It was obvious from the way those light blue eyes shone.
His features were amiable and the smoothness of his voice was only rivaled by Jake’s, or…or…
