Chapter 21

“Did you see that Chad boy with her?”

“Yes.”

“Were they kissing again?”

“No.”

“Good,” she snaps. “I don’t want any grandbabies. That boy reeksof sex and I don’t want our little Beth to end up under him.”

“No,” Steven agrees, honestly. Perhaps this is the first time in a week, three months, or even four years they have concurred on something. Praise Jesus!

“You are not stopping at Snyder’s, right?”

“No, Margot.”

“Good. You know how I feel about you drinking and driving, especially if Beth is in the truck with you.”

“Yes, dear.”

“On your way home, stop at a convenience store and pick up some skim milk. Beth will need her cereal in the morning.”

“Of course.”

“And don’t be late. Beth has a biology exam to study for tonight.”

“I will not be late.” It sounds robotic and loveless, exactly how he feels about his marriage lately.

His conversation with Margot ends. Thank Jesus. Have mercy on his soul. An angel in heaven is looking out for him.
