Chapter 24

* * * *

Steven realizes that it’s time to leave. Surely he has made an ass out of himself this evening, and no time like the present is better for a quick departure. Besides, Margot has incessantly returned to his mind, speaking through her laughter: Steven, you will never learn. What kind of man do you think you are? You’re controlled. You’ll always be controlled. Now, get back in your truck, pick our daughter up, stop for some skim milk, and come home where you are loved and cared for.

The battle is over. Once again, Margot Loft has won. Steven can still hear his wife laughing inside his head, rolling with tears in her eyes, almost choking. Before turning around and heading back into his mediocre life, he calls out, “Martin!”

The businessman pops his chunky head out of the stockroom and replies, “Yes?”

“Pynchon. Hold him for next time, please.”

“Of course, Steven. Until next time.”
