Chapter 35

“I was gone for two seconds,” Danny said with a chuckle, hurrying around to open the passenger side door. “Here, wait,” he said, setting a soothing mitt on her shoulder. “It’s all automatic, there’s a button over here, see…?” The seat slowly righted itself with a small mechanical whirr, and Ammaji smoothed her bun.

“My scooter is not quite so high-tech,” she said. “There’s pretty much the horn and the brakes.”

“I quite understand,” Danny said, turning down the radio. “At least you have those.”

“That squirrel was suicidal,” she said. She affected wounded pride, but when Danny met her sideways eyes, they both laughed.

“So, this market,” Danny said. “You know how to get there?”

“We’ll find out,” she said. “Hit it!” She smacked the dash and Danny pulled around and turned right to head down the hill.
