Chapter 52

“Yeah, Ma?”

“Your Ammaji and I have been talking…”

“Yeah, Ma?”

“I notice you don’t seem to go out as Raima much any more,” she said. Ashok shrugged. Monica took a big breath. “Maybe you should,” she said gently.

“Why?” Ashok said. “I figured you’d be thrilled.”

“Yes, well…frankly, so did I,” she said. “Look, Ashok, I’m not trying to pretend like I understand why you like dressing as a woman, and I’m not trying to pretend like I want to start taking you places and introducing you as my daughter…”

“Really, Ma? Your daughter? Going out in a wig and a bunch of your jewelry a couple nights a week doesn’t mean I’m becoming a woman. You know I’m not gonna come home from the bar one night with a sex change, right?”

She held up a placating hand. “I know, I know. Your Ammaji has had to talk me off a couple of ledges, but I think I’m starting to get it.”

Ashok looked at Ammaji with a raised eyebrow, and she gave a small nod and a smile. She’s trying, her expression said. Just listen.
