Chapter 4

Cressie and I left work at the same time so we walked together. I had to pass her car on my way to the bus stop. While I watched her putting her things away in the trunk, I told her about Nel and her strange behavior on the bus that morning, including how she had blushed and looked away when she saw me staring at her.

“I don’t know what to make of it,” I said. “The whole time I’ve known her, she’s always been the most conscientious driver, never losing her cool over people cutting her off or whatever.”

Opening the door, Cressie leaned on the top of the car and asked, “You said this happened right after your conversation with John about Patty?”

“Yeah.”

“Has it ever occurred to you that she might tease you a bit because she likes you?”

“Nel? Well, no. I mean, why would it? I don’t even know if she’s gay. Maybe there was something in the road, I don’t know.”
