Steve answered Jared’s call. “Hey, any luck?”
“Not a bit. What did D & D have to say?” Jared asked.
“Nothing solid on their end either, just some claw marks on a tree. Tommy’s in; he brought a deer from Alabama. Roadkill.”
“We’ll butcher it, serve it for dinner tonight. They love fresh meat.”
“Some good news. A Mr. Carl Litten is coming in, says he found one of the cats.”
“Really? Which one?” Hope stretched within him.
“He just said a cougar. Hell, there’s still two missing. Audrey and Pinhead.” Jared heard Steve turn away from the phone and give instructions. “Sorry, back atcha.”
“When will he be there?”
“About six, he said. After work.”
Something didn’t sound right to Jared, but he couldn’t pinpoint it. He was tired, knew he wasn’t thinking all that clearly. “Okay, we’ll be back in by then. I’ll check back in an hour or so.”
