With a sigh, he punched numbers into his car phone and listened to his voicemails. Seventeen messages. He listened as he cruised up the crowded street. Innocuous messages from colleagues about the next union meeting, one from his daughter, Lisette, about her car needing new tires, and then something interesting.

“Lt. Lawton, this is Corporal Richards, calling for Major Bowman. He wants you to read the field report from Officer Clinton, file number 2628458, regarding a tiger spotted in District One. Call him immediately after you’ve read the report. Thanks.”
