Lawton’s words blared from the chopper, but Jared wasn’t about to walk out of the woods, not this close to his cat. Peter looked worried though, and said, “What if they arrest us for interfering with a police procedure?”

“Go if you want to. I’m not.” Jared hefted his tranq gun and resettled Sultan’s leash. “I think I can hear something.”

They both stood still, straining to hear through the rushing roar of the chopper’s blades. Then a crunch of something moving through the woods toward them, something much larger than a human. Branches snapped, crisp in the night air.

“Sultan! Sultan!” Jared’s voice sounded too loud to him. But if Sultan were frightened and running, Jared would have to get his attention quickly. “Sultan, this way!”
