This plan worked for a little while. Dad tried to rile me up a few times, but he never blatantly insulted me around Joshy. Our shouting matches turned into passive aggressive conversations. I’m sure Mama was grateful for the relative silence, but the hatred in Dad’s eyes was as loud as ever.
The real silence was from Blake. Ever since we were caught he avoided me at school, stopped inviting me to hang out with everyone, he barely even looked at me. He didn’t tell anyone exactly what happened, because that would have outted him as well. Instead, he said I had been doing something wrong, he had been in the wrong place at the wrong time, and somehow I had gotten him blamed. He started dating one of the girls in our class soon after. I think he’s married with a kid now.
I wasn’t really heartbroken since I hadn’t been in love. Regardless, I sulked for weeks. Then a new opportunity came into my life. Rather, it arrived in a moving van.
