I went to the party as Joshy’s chaperone, but there wasn’t much for me to do. Joshy was the youngest kid there and I was the oldest, since Kalil is a few months younger than I am. Kalil was busy watching over his siblings and I was busy blending in with the furniture. Once the puppy came out I contemplated leaving altogether, since no one would notice, but I had to be there to walk Joshy home and I didn’t want him to feel abandoned.
Going out on a limb, I approached Kalil while the kids were all petting the new puppy. “He’s cute,” I said. “Good choice.”
“Yeah, I heard they’re good with kids. Besides, he looked like he needed friends.”
I lowered my voice to less than a whisper. “Like I need you?”
Kalil snapped his head to stare at me, wide-eyed. “Shh!”
