Chapter 10

“I’ll tell you over dinner,” I said, rising from my chair.

“Why can’t you tell me now?”

“Patience, young grasshopper.”

“I don’t even know what that means.”

“It means wait, Mother.”

She gave me a frustrated look before agreeing to wait until we had dinner to discuss Paul. I hated annoying her, but I really did need some extra time to figure out what to say. Of course I wasn’t going to tell my mother that her new boyfriend was attractive and sexy and that he’d fucked me last summer, but I needed to tell her something about him so she’d relax and let me off the hook.

During the drive to a restaurant in Old City that she liked, I tried to think of ways to describe my feelings about Paul that wouldn’t sound salacious, crazy, or upsetting to my mother. I needed to get past this with her so she’d move on and change the subject.
