Chapter 18

“Let me call the doctor.”

Jesse forces a smile but it feels like a grimace instead. He presses an arm to his side, his breath stuttering.

“Ms. Janssen, is it okay—if I head home now? I don’t think I can…I can…” He sways.

She rushes forward, grabbing him by the shoulder. She takes her papers and pens from Jesse, and brings him inside, ushering him to a chair.

“Absolutely, Jesse. Let my driver take you home. Sit.”

Jesse nods, grateful. He doesn’t think he can make it back on his own and he whimpers softly as the dizziness takes over him again.

The ride back to Trey’s house is quiet. Ken, Ms. Janssen’s driver, leaves Jesse to his own thoughts. Jesse eventually falls asleep and Ken wakes him up when he pulls over in front of the gate.

“You live here?”

There’s an undertone of disbelief in Ken’s voice and Jesse knows exactly what the driver is thinking—you, a PA, live in a house like this? Jesse slips out of the car, smiling a little.
