Chapter 24

“You’re joking,” he says, looking away.

“I would never joke about a thing like this. Jess, look at me,” Trey pleads.

Jesse looks at Trey, unable to deny that voice. He gazes at Trey’s smiling face, and he knows that Trey is telling him the truth. God, I got the part of Dante? He feels breathless all of a sudden.

“Trey?”

“It’s all true, Jess. But you need to go to read once more. We can go tomorrow. Hey, are you crying?”

Jesse wipes his eyes with the back of his hand.

“Screw you.” He laughs, jerking backwards when Trey reaches out to tousle his hair. “Hey!”

Trey laughs with him. “Now eat. You must be starving.”

Jesse starts to dig into his bacon strips. “Have some?”

“Nah, I’m good.” Trey watches him eat, smiling. “And I’m…I’m sorry about Brent.” His smile falters a little. “He can be a bastard sometimes but he has been my best buddy for a long time. I guess he thought he was looking out for me.”
