Chapter 13

Despite his meager resources, Barry felt justly proud of himself when he put the finishing touches to two huge platters of the modified egg dish.

“That oatmeal was great, is there any m…Wow.” Jake stopped in the middle of the kitchen and looked longingly at the eggs. “Those for us?”

Barry smiled. “Yes. And seeing as how you’re here, you can help carry them. That’s if your hand is okay.”

Jake’s gaze remained fixed on the food. “It’s great, thanks.” He smiled and picked up both platters and somehow managed the pot of refried beans as well.

Barry followed Jake into the dining room less than a minute later with the coffee pot and six mugs. The two serving platters and the bowls sat, empty, in the center of the table. The plates in front of each cowboy were full, although the food on them was disappearing at an alarming rate.

“Didn’t you save any for me?” Barry asked, although he was secretly pleased his labors were so appreciated.

The men stopped eating and no one met his gaze.
