Chapter 58

“See, told you we’d get you here in one piece,” Jimmy said, undoing his seatbelt and giving Barry a hug.

“What is this place?” Barry asked, looking out the window at a single-storey log cabin.

“My grandparents’ honeymoon cabin,” Jake said. “Grandpa Pierce built it for his bride-to-be because they couldn’t afford a honeymoon.”

Barry thought that so romantic.

“They always came up here every year on their anniversary to spend a few days together. My mom and dad did the same when they got married.” Under the blanket Jake took Barry’s left hand while Jimmy sought out his right. “You, me, and Jimmy can’t get married, but I’d like to think of today as our…zero anniversary, and…”

Barry squeezed Jake’s hand and swallowed back a sob. “Yes. Thank you.”

“We love you,” Jimmy said quietly.

Barry let go of Jake’s hand and turned to face Jimmy. Barry couldn’t see much in the dim cab, and Jimmy’s Stetson hid his face.
