Chapter 6

“I was just heading up to my room. Is there anything else you need?”

Benjamin shook his head. “Absolutely nothing.”

“Very good, then. Good night.”

Clarke had taken the first two stairs before Benjamin stopped him.

“Clarke, I want to thank you for all your help. You do a really good job so I’m giving you a bonus.”

Benjamin held out the fifty.

Clarke looked at it and then at Benjamin. “I couldn’t, Benjamin. You already pay me well.”

Benjamin shook his head. “I don’t care. One thing I always hated in my old job was when my hard work went unappreciated. I got paid reasonably well, too, but a bonus, or even a comment every now and again, wouldn’t have gone astray, so I insist.”

Clarke nodded once, hesitantly, then took the fifty-dollar note.

“Thank you very much, Benjamin. Are you sure there’s nothing more I can do for you?”

Benjamin shook his head. “No, thank you. Go to bed.”
