Chapter 16

“Dammit!” said Benjamin. “I don’t need their permission to leave.”

He returned to the wardrobe, retrieved his clothes and patted the pockets to check whether he still had possession of his mobile phone and house keys. He’d just finished dressing when Edith returned with the doctor.

“Doing a runner?” said the doctor, a tall thin man with acne scars and thick-rimmed glasses

“Yes, I have a dog at home waiting to be fed.”

“Isn’t there someone you can call?”

“No, there isn’t. Besides, there’s nothing wrong with me.”

The doctor handed Edith his clipboard. “Let’s say I examine you and if there is, in fact, nothing wrong with you, we can talk about you going home.”

Benjamin sighed and rolled his eyes. “Alright then, but make it quick.”

The doctor raised his eyebrows. “I’ll do my best.”
