Chapter 16

“When you wake up, I’ll be gone,” Candy whispered softly before he fell asleep. He sounded apologetic, or maybe that was just how Cody wanted him to sound. The last thing he thought, ere sleep overcame him, was that if he held on tightly enough, Candy might not leave.

Cody awoke in the middle of the night, wanting to check on his bedfellow—no, that wasn’t it, there was noise coming from downstairs. It was the middle of the night and there was a strange noise and Cody was twelve years old. He knew Mom and Dad were sleeping, sound and fast asleep; he knew better than to wake them. He would go and check. Maybe it was the arctic fox that had visited them once before, sneaking into the garage one particularly cold day. Cody sat up and grabbed for the He-Man doll that slept next to his head on the pillow with him. He-Man was good company
