Chapter 5

Thursday can’t come soon enough. My sister agrees to watch Tyler while I go to the parent/teacher conference, and invites us both to come over early for dinner with her family. The twins pounce on Tyler the moment we walk in the door, shrieking and tugging at him, vying for his attention. He loves it, and without even a backward glance my way, lets them lead him up to their bedroom to play video games.

Dawn greets me with a peck on the cheek. “He’s growing like a weed,” she says, taking the bottle of wine I brought to go with the meal. “Before you know it, he’ll be in college.”

“Yours first. They’re older.” I smell a roast cooking in the kitchen, and my stomach growls appreciatively. “Dinner smells wonderful. Thanks for watching him.”

Dawn waves away my words. “Oh, please. The twins’ll see him more than me the whole time he’s here. Go talk to Chris while I put the food on the table. He’s in the den.”
