Chapter 22

“Here we go,” I tell him as I turn the key in the ignition. Bracing an arm behind the passenger seat headrest, I half-turn to watch behind us as I back out of Dawn’s driveway. I give Tyler a quick grin which he doesn’t return.

“What’s up, kiddo?” I ask. I don’t really expect a response.

He surprises me. “You had a sleepover last night, too?”

I tap the brakes and glance at him in the mirror. “What?”

A small pout tugs at his mouth. “Aunt Dawn said you had a sleepover last night, too. Without me!”

“You stayed with Mandy and April,” I remind him. I put the car into drive and ease away from my sister’s home, and resist the urge to turn up the radio so I can’t hear Tyler’s accusations.

“You said you were going out!” he cries.

I sigh and run a hand through my hair to brush it out of my face. “Honey, I did. I had dinner with a friend, okay?”

“McDonald’s?” He’s on the verge of tears now.
