Chapter 6

Ben led him a little way up the street, but turned back when he saw a police car pull out onto the road one block ahead. Their pace quickened, which wasn’t too bad while they were on the smooth surface of the concrete pavers, but once they turned into the car park, Rocky could feel his hands and knees sustaining several cuts and scratches.

Fortunately, the police car drove by and Ben was able to slow down. But the damage had been done. Every step was now a miniature agony. The small pricks of tiny stones on cut flesh sent spears of white hot pain spearing through Rocky. Still, he fought back the urge to cry out or complain. Any such lapse on his behalf would only result in more pain.

They entered the alley, where darkness cloaked them. Rocky felt marginally better. They were hidden and close to safety.

“Stand up,” said Ben.
