Chapter 13

In truth, the mysteries of my father’s life were keeping my mind off of Lock’s death. Unfortunately, though, I was missing Carla and called her from my cell phone. I was told by Carla’s father, Jonathan Benning, that she was not doing well, was suffering from a virus, and that she couldn’t speak with me. Jonathan was gruff with me and informed me, “Look, Nicholas…Carla is ill. She’s incapable of coming to the phone. When she’s well again, I’m sure she’ll be glad to get in touch with you. Until then, I suggest you leave her alone so she can repair.” I hung up the phone and ignored my father-in-law, believing he was still stressed and angry because of his grandson’s death. If I didn’t ignore him, I would have gone crazy, losing my mind—something I already believed had happened to Carla and her hostile father.
