Now and again John bumped into Nick and the two of them went on long walks with Bandit. Nick’s tales of his time in the Royal Navy were fascinating, but as John told the older man more than once, the descriptions of life aboard a rolling and pitching ship proved to John that he was without doubt a landlubber.
On numerous occasions, John tried to find the cave he’d sheltered in, but, lacking a strong judgment of distance, couldn’t work out how far along the beach he’d been that night. Nick, who had lived in his cottage for several years, said he didn’t know of any caves locally.
