Safe in the knowledge he was invisible to the average human eye, he walked through the sliding double doors and inside. As quickly as butter across a hot pan, he stuck his leg out, and a passing nurse fell face first to the floor. By the time she realised what had happened, Charam was three floors away, grinning from ear to ear. The stink of diseased and decaying flesh was almost eye-watering. Taking care to keep to the wall, Charam crept along the corridor until he arrived at the room where the dying man lay surrounded by his nearest and dearest. It wouldn’t be long now. He could sense a faint heartbeat in the man. He could also sense there weren’t too many beats left in that withered organ
The silence in the room was a weighty burden borne by all those present. Only the occasional sob broke the silence. They were waiting for their father and grandfather to pass before they gave vent to their tears. Until then they were doing their best to appear strong.
Charam giggled.
