As Finley opened the back of a solar-powered delivery van, Dawn stood in front of me on the sidewalk.
“You will come back, right?” she asked.
“Definitely.” I wasn’t even ready to leave. I wanted to say good-bye to Dawn privately, to finish what we’d started under the tree, but that obviously wasn’t going to happen.
She smiled and took my hand and I gazed into her eyes, hoping it wouldn’t be for the last time.
