Chapter 28

I stopped my bike and Sol walked out the door.

I froze.

“Go around to the back, please,” he said.

I walked the motorcycle up the driveway and around to a back yard. Once there I flipped up my facemask. “What is this?”

He smiled. “I’m Sol’s twin brother, Zol. Congratulations, you’ve passed your initiation test.”

“Huh?”

“We’ve never sent a recruit to a normal town like this because usually it’s impossible, but your case is special. I reach out to normal allies here, just like Sol with his community HEO members. We don’t have many like you in the entire country who are able to not only manage trips in between both worlds, but who are willing to take the risk. Sol had to find out if you were trustworthy before he could send you on real missions.”

I slumped, disappointed my mission had been fake, but also relieved I’d passed Sol’s test. “Do you think next time he’ll let me know more about what I’m getting myself into?”
