“This was supposed to be my room, but I feel safer when I stay with Calista. So it’s all yours tonight.” Alexis blinked her eyes several times before looking towards Lynn.


What Lynn saw in those blue eyes nearly broke her heart. A deep sadness lingered and the sparkle she’d seen earlier was no longer evident. She hated that she had been the one to bring the blinding darkness into Alexis’s eyes. “Thanks,” Lynn whispered. She hesitated a moment, then said, “Alexis, if you ever want to talk…I know you don’t know me, but I can be a good listener.” Lynn covered Alexis’s smaller hand with her own as she met her eyes.


Alexis stiffened and Lynn was certain she would pull away, but she didn’t. “Thanks,” Alexis replied in a shaky voice.
