“Vince, where the hell are you going?” Bren called from outside.

“After the night I’ve just had, I’m going back to number 611,” Vince replied, laughing. “And don’t wait up for me!”

Everything outside in the corridor faded into silence. My heartbeat was slowing, though my throat still felt painfully tight and the sweat from my shock hadn’t yet dried on my forehead. But I wasn’t in any pain. There was no sound of my bones being crushed in the maw of a ravening monster, nor the shriek of abused flesh as my limbs were wrenched from their sockets and thrown to the floor. I glanced down, noticing the monster’s boots. They were very familiar.

“Gaz,” I mouthed against his palm, words muffled. “Lt mmgo nww.”
