Chapter 17

Kevin plopped to the ground with relief.

“We’re making great time!” Ash said. “It’s almost two-thirty. We’ll rest for a while, walk for another hour or so, and then stop for the night.”

“I didn’t think we’d stop until it was dark outside,” Kevin said in surprise.

“Aren’t your legs tired?” Dayna asked. She sat down and leaned against a tree.

“Maybe a little tired,” Kevin said. Actually, his legs felt shaky now.

“After a few days we’ll walk longer,” Ash said. “But for now while you’re…I mean, while we’re all getting used to walking through the woods, we’ll stop in the early evening. Besides, I think we’ll be coming to a town soon and I’d rather not try passing through on our first day.”

“Good thinking,” Kevin said. Ash knew everything about being in the woods. She’d even found a way for them to cross the river without getting all wet. She had said if they followed the river, eventually it would get small enough they could just jump across. She was right.
