Chapter 29

Kevin had finally worn himself out and walked beside her as rain streamed down his face. “I won all the games of tag. I’m the champion.”

“You did not win all the games!” Dayna said. She’d tried to tell Kevin making Ash ‘it’ was a mistake. Every time he did, the tall girl took one step and tagged him back immediately. Dayna had never laughed so hard.

“Okay, but I won a lot,” Kevin said. “I think we all won the same amount of times.”

“Sounds good to me,” Dayna said.

Ash trailed behind Dayna and Kevin for a change.

Dayna glanced back. “How are you?”

“I’m okay,” Ash said. “I just feel bad. I’m the one who brought you two into this. I didn’t know this would happen.”

“It’s still better than being with our parents,” Dayna said.

“She’s right,” Kevin said. “Hey, look, I can open my black eye. I’m getting better. If we were at home, Dad would have probably hit me in the eye againby now.”
