Chapter 39

When Matt was done he rang the doorbell, Jon-Allen by his side.

“We’re finished, ma’am,” they chorused.

“Thank you. Good job!” A five dollar bill was pressed into both of their outstretched right hands. They walked to the end of the driveway and Jon-Allen thrust his money at Matt.

“I told you to keep your share,” Matt said as he pushed the mower ahead of him on the sidewalk.

“Okay. But you’re the one who’s going to be living on the streets soon.”

“We’re not going to live on the streets. We’re going to live in the woods. I bet we’ll find a place where no one will ever look for us and build a house.”

“You’re still not going to be able to get food without money.” Jon-Allen untied his shirt from around his head and wiped his face. “We can mow more yards after lunch.”
