Chapter 41

Matt gripped the couch cushion. “What do you mean?”

Jon-Allen shook his head and hid his face in Auntie’s shoulder. “She lied to me.”

“She didn’t think you were old enough to know. But I’m glad she finally told you,” Auntie said.

Jon-Allen sat up and wiped his eyes again as Tyler walked through the front door. “May Matt and I go to the park?”

Auntie looked at the clock. “You can go for a little while. Be back at five-thirty for supper, and then you both have got to do your homework.”

Jon-Allen jumped up and Matt followed him out the back door. He knew where they were going. They ran across the back yard, through an alley, down a side street, across a parking lot, and into a playground. They climbed a ladder, crossed a swaying bridge, and sat just inside the top of a big red tube slide. It was their secret place.

Jon-Allen leaned against the side of the slide, avoiding eye contact. Matt watched with a feeling of trepidation.
