Chapter 47

“Okay, just hang on a second,” she said.

“You don’t care about me or Dayna, and you never did!” Kevin wrenched himself free and stormed off.

“Dayna! Dayna!” he shouted. He ran back to the empty parking spot and around all the nearby cars. He crouched to look under them. “Where are you?”

The rain poured faster and harder as Kevin dropped to his knees. He put his head on the asphalt and sobbed.

She was gone.

Someone put a hand on his shoulder and Kevin’s heart leapt with joy as he sat up.

It was only Ash.

“I hate you,” he said. “Go away.”

Ash sat on the rain-soaked ground beside him and sobbed. “Kevin, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to make Dayna leave. I do care about you. I promise we’ll find her before we keep looking for Matt. I should never have gotten a ride from that girl, okay? Please don’t hate me.”

Kevin’s heart melted. The real Ash was back. And he needed her.

“I know you didn’t mean it,” he said. “But I love Dayna just as much as you love Matt, and now she’s gone.”
