Three other girls sat at the table, too, finishing their cereal and toast. Ash never talked to any of them, even the one she shared a room with.
“What do you think will happen?” one of them asked.
Ash shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. I don’t need to talk about it.” She knew the routine.
She walked into her room and shut the door, flopping on her bed. She didn’t want to hear any more empty promises about how the new place would be great and she would see her brother more.
Of course, he probably didn’t want to see her anyway.
Then again, she had at least ten unopened letters from him.
“Ash, this is about adoption,” the social worker said at the bedroom door.

Ash walked into the familiar court house with Eddie and Val. For once she wasn’t in trouble, but she hadn’t slept all night. With a pounding heart and sweaty palms she entered the Civil Court Room, and froze.
