“Well, the carrots are probably fine. We’ll have to throw out everything else. Hey, I forgot we still have three cans of pop.” She handed Dayna and Kevin a can, opened her own, and took a long drink. “Dayna, will you dump the rest of the milk out and rinse this jug in the creek?” Ash used the water from the melted bag of ice to refill the other milk jug.

“When it gets dark I want to take a bath in the creek,” Dayna said when she returned.

“Me too. We’ll take turns sitting in here with Kevin. But for now I need to write a letter.”

“Why?” Kevin asked, pulling out the bag of carrots.

“I told Matt when I got halfway to him I’d send him the rest of the plan. We’re not quite there yet, but I’m going to go ahead and write the letter. I brought envelopes and stamps, too.” Ash tore a sheet of paper from her notebook and then turned to the page where she’d written her code.
