“She probably just smells like it because she was around the others. Someone probably spilled something on her.” Ash glanced down at him. “I know you and Dayna have been through a lot, but it’s all over now. Not everyone you meet is going to be like your parents.”

“I didn’t say she was like our parents, I said she was drunk!” Kevin shrieked.

Two adults walked past them and stared. Kevin put his head down.

“It was a movie he watched, it really scared him,” Ash told them, walking backwards. “I’m sorry. I have to babysit him all the time and he’s a little out there.”

Kevin stomped his feet. Ash wasn’t making any sense.

“You’re not my best friend anymore,” he said.

Ash chuckled and Kevin’s lip trembled. What was happening?

“You’ll understand all of this soon,” she said. “That’s everything on the list. Do you remember what I promised you the last time we went to the store?”

“Candy,” Kevin muttered. That seemed like such a long time ago.
