Chapter 32

Turning another bend, Elke pointed through the misty rain to something only she could see. “Up ahead!” she cried. When lightning illuminated the mountainside, they barely made out the small entrance not two yards away.

Stepping gingerly on the slippery rocks, Shaela set her foot on a patch of wet moss and lost her footing. Airk, watching her cross, caught her under her arms before she went plummeting into the crevice below. “Watch your step, darling.”

Being soaked to the bone and pelted by rain did little to liven Shaela’s spirits. “I am not your darling!” she yelled, but her words were torn away with the wind, and she didn’t hesitate to hold Airk’s offered hand the rest of the way.
