Streamers hung from chandeliers and music began the moment the travelers arrived. Jaelin spotted her father at the head of the crowd and ran to embrace him. “Father!”

“Thank the Fates you’re all right,” King Randel proclaimed as cheers erupted around them.

The King nodded past her at his bowing castellan. “Thank you for bringing my daughter home.”

Jaelin made the introductions. “This is Kitt, and the infamous Airk Ranon.”

King Randel looked less than thrilled to meet the man he’d banished long ago. “I thought I had you exiled.”

With a nonchalant shrug, Airk replied, “I didn’t ask to come back.”

“At least you’re honest,” the King said with a laugh. “And pardoned, as well. You deserve it for protecting my daughter.”

“Both of them,” Airk replied.
