Chapter 10

Before he could speak, Janine looked up and saw him. “B-612,” she said. “Where’s Grantland? I can’t raise him on his extension.”

“Try the kitchen,” Will told her. As the citizens looked at him, he flashed them a toothy grin that felt stiff on his lips. “Hold tight, folks. We’ll be right with you.”

The interrogation rooms and holding cells were behind the scenes, out of the public’s eye. Will had to pass through two locked areas to get into the back hallway that accessed the rooms. He kept his ID card ready—he had to swipe it once, show it to a fellow officer before he was allowed into the area, then swipe it again to enter the B hallway. At the closed door to room B-612, he had to scan the card a third time before he could enter.
