Chapter 7

By the time he was a yearling, his shoulder and back had healed. And then he went suddenly and horribly lame.

I’d been feeding him concentrates recommended by my vet, who now announced they contained too much protein. Cruz had enlarged growth plates.

A year-long diet of carrots and apples coupled with grass and hay enabled his recovery. By which time we had moved from England to the States and away from my trainer. I, who had never started a youngster in my life, would have to back him by myself.

Using Monty Roberts’ methods, I ‘joined up’ with Cruz and cemented the bond which had been forming between us while I nursed him during his early years. When I later backed him, he trusted me enough to go at once on trail rides alone.
