Chapter 16

The day of my interview finally arrived. I wasn’t nervous because I knew I had a fair chance. Local government being the gossip-ridden place it was, news of who the other candidates were soon filtered out. It was a constant source of amazement to me how quickly news spread in such an organisation.

My interview was at the town hall. I donned my rarely used suit; the last time it had been worn was for the wedding of a distant cousin.

I knew two of the people on the interview panel: the personnel lady from the Council and Mr Gordon, the chief librarian for the district. The other man I didn’t know, but he didn’t ask many questions.

At the end of the interview they if I had any questions. I hadn’t, so Mr Gordon told me that they’d make their decision the next day. I’d be contacted by phone by a member of the interview panel
